Rangy herd ungulates from Alderaan, nerfs are known for their sour disposition and their pungent odor. Generations of ranching have led to their proliferation throughout the galaxy, so that nerfs continue to prosper on many planets even though their home world has since been obliterated. Such wide distribution has led to a broad genetic mix of races descended from mainline nerf stock, with subspecies looking quite different from one another. The Grizmallt nerf, for example, is rangy compared to its thick-bodied cousins. Nerfherding is a common profession on agrarian worlds, where nerfs are raised for their milk, meat and hides. Alderaanian nerfherders in particular had a well earned reputation for being a rough and hardy lot, with a stench that would rival their lot.

Behind the Scenes

Nerfs were introduced in The Empire Strikes Back as part of a lengthy putdown lobbed at Han Solo by Princess Leia, culminating in her calling him a "scruffy-looking nerf-herder." The line was memorable enough to be adopted by a rock band in the 1990s, Nerf Herder, well known for supplying the title theme to the "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" television series.
